The Civil War: A to Z

2:55 PM Posted In Edit This 162 Comments »

My dear little friend and next door neighbor, Montana (12 years old, 7th grade) came to me asking for help with a school project. Her assignment was to make a book about the Civil War. There were some guidelines and restrictions, but the design and overall theme and look were up to each student.

Before you gasp and think that I made the book for her, let me clarify a few things. Montana has been stamping with me for 1 1/2 years. She is such a little doll, much more mature and responsible than most 12 year olds, so she has full access to my stamp room and everything in it!! What a lucky girl!! Since we have spent so much time together, Montana has become quite a fabulous little paper crafter. That having been said, she did get some help from me on the project, but only for the sake of time. Every idea, technique or design in the book is one that she could do completely on her own, with no assistance from me.

So please allow me to share with you our project: "The Civil War: A to Z". I loved the project and will always cherish the time I got to spend with my darling little friend, Montana. Didn't she do an awesome job????? And please, if you love the project, be kind enough to leave a comment for her. It will mean a lot to her, as she put her heart into every minute of making it.

(note: I didn't include every page of the book simply for space sake. The pages here are some of our favorites).

If you click on the last picture of this post, a larger version will allow you to read about the making of the book. If you have questions on how we did anything that you see, please send us an email and Montana and I will be happy to respond.

Montana, This is a MARVELOUS project. As a retired teacher I can tell you this is definitely "A" work! The only way this project will not get an A (and unfortunately I have seen this happen, even to my own child) is if for some reason you did not follow the teacher's instructions or if some of your information is incorrect. I have saved every page -- even your last page of how you did this. I may have to recreate your project as a gift to my hubby. My hubby is a big Civil War buff and has read several books on the subject. He and two other men in the family near us have this goal of visiting ALL of the Civil War battlefield sites within a day's drive of us. So the three wives go along and enjoy being together -- and learn a bit in the process. This is a fabulous project and I hope you save it for a long time!! Share it with your own children some day. This is that good! You obviously have had a wonderful and patient teacher to help with the learning that was necessary for you to have the skills to do this!

God bless,
Judy Jackson -- who lives 45 minutes away from the Gettysburg Battlefield in PA.

If I were your teacher there would not be enough ++++++ (s) in the world to add behind your “A” – A++++++++++ to infinity. That is one fantastic, awesome, amazing, beautiful, handsome, creative and wonderful book. My 10 year old grandson does great work as well – He wants to be an architect when he grows up. I don’t know what you plan for your future, but you might want to consider an art school as you are SO unbelievably talented.

I am so in awe at the work you did. Your contribution to the art world is beyond compare. I hope that you will preserve this book and keep it for the rest of your life. This is truly an heirloom to be treasured and shared with generations to come.

Thank you Kathie - I have looked at Montana's fabulous book and I tried to leave a comment, but I don't think it worked!! This really is an amazing piece of work and so beautifully constructed, you must be so proud of your protege!!!! Can you just imagine the sort of work she will be producing in, say, ten years time??!!! Please tell Montana I said it really is one of the best pieces of work I have ever seen, and many congratulations to you both - she is sure to get "Top of the class" for it xx

Thank you again for sharing it with us.

Hi Kathie and Montana!

I wanted you to know that when I received your email this morning, I
shared the photos from your blog with my husband, a high school history teacher. His response when looking at the book was, "She got an A+, didn't she?" So your expectations are realistic:)

GREAT JOB!!!!!

Peace

Love your layout, and your great use of your A to Z format. I am amazed you figured out something for each letter! I have such a hard time with that myself.

You should be extremely proud of your project. I do hope we get to find out your grade (even though I am sure it is an "A").

I think all of us are jealous that you have full access to Kathie's stamp room!!

Great job! (I may even scrap/stamp lift an idea or two).

If this project is any indication as to your artistic talent, then I wouldn't be surprised to see you as one of the Hosts on TV Weekly and/or your own articles in craft magazines! What a wonderfully talented young lady you are! I could learn alot from you.

Montana,
What a terrific job. This is a wonderful job and you will treasure it forever. It will help people to understand a lot about this important time in the history of our country. You made the pages look as if you just pulled them out of a family trunk.
Congratulations on a job well done.
